We are moms from Dothan, Montgomery, Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham, Auburn and everywhere in between. We birth our babies in hospitals and homes. We educate our children at home, in public and private schools. We love our midwives, doulas and doctors. We vote Democrat and Republican. We are churchgoers, or not particularly religious. What brings us together is our belief that birth is a natural process, that birth should not be tampered with, and most of all, that decisions about birth belong to mothers.

We educate ourselves about the process of birth in order to keep our babies safe. Safety is the reason we choose to give birth in our own way. And safety is the reason our legislators must legalize Certified Professional Midwives in Alabama.

The Alabama Birth Coalition is a grassroots network of parents committed to improving access to natural childbirth options for women, families and communities in Alabama. Our goal is to protect existing childbirth options and to gain access to options currently unavailable in the state. A secondary goal is to promote the rights of parents to make appropriate health care decisions for their families.

We have found the Midwives Model of Care to be the best kind of care available for pregnancy and childbirth. This model advocates investigating the evidence behind common obstetric practices in order to determine what techniques are safe and effective. More information about the MMOC and grassroots consumer advocacy for midwifery can be found on the website of Citizens for Midwifery.
