FREE THE MIDWIVES!
Benefit Concert to Legalize Certified Professional Midwives for
Out-of-Hospital Births in Alabama
BIRMINGHAM (July 6, 2009)— Phenomenal music, tremendous food and exceptional company -- what more could you ask for on a lazy summer Sunday in Birmingham? How about doing all of this for a good cause? Alabama freed the hops. Now it’s time to free the midwives!
Join us at the Bottletree Cafe (3719 3rd Ave. S, Birmingham) on July 12th for a show to benefit the Alabama Birth Coalition. The fabulous acts performing are: Kate Taylor, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Duquette Johnston,13ghosts , and Vulture Whale. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the music starts at 4 p.m. Bottletree is known for its tasty vegetarian/vegan vittles.
Why do midwives need to be freed? Because the state of Alabama considers them criminals if they attend out-of-hospital birth within its borders. Midwives legally attend out-of-hospital birth in 26 states. The Alabama Birth Coalition is working towards a licensure law that would enable these highly skilled care providers to serve Alabama mothers in their field of expertise without fear of prosecution. So come on out to the Bottletree Cafe and help us free the midwives!
