I must agree with this video. I had my first two children in the hospital. I had my third at home. All three of my children were born in different states. I am currently pregnant with my fourth and due to changes to jobs and education we made the decision to move back to my home state of AL. I must say that I was very very sad to leave behind a wonderful midwife. She meant the world to me. And I was even sadder when I got to AL and began a search for Midwives and found that there were none close enough to me and that there were no CPMs! So our plans went from having a midwife to giving birth at home unassisted. I would rather have a midwife but none are available...and the hospital procedures, rules and regulations are unacceptable. It is no longer acceptable to me to give birth in an environment that treats birth as unnatural.

I have a unique perpective on the lack of midwifery in Alabama that may provide hope or vision for the ABC. I am a Birmingham native who recently lived in Baton Rouge, LA. My wife is pregnant at week 22. As an officer in the Navy and an engineer, I gained an appreciation for facts, science and the wholistic approach too the human experience. From this vantage point, I am surprised at the lack of acceptance of midwives in Birmingham. Coming from Louisiana I was expecting an increase in acceptance and a more modern approach in Alabama.

The past few months we have had the pleasure of seeing a top-notch hospital with an innovative approach to incorporating CNM's into practice. The Ochnner Health System has been an enlightening bright spot in our pregnancy experience. We feel it is "a 21st century appreciation of an Ole Fashioned manner of health care!" I am really upset to the fact that Alabama does not allow home births. I am pregnant with my 3rd child and even though I feel like I could do it alone, I am terrified that something would go wrong. I had my 1st and 2nd babies in a hospital and it was absolutely HORRIBLE!!! My 1st was induced and they treated my like I was an idiot and my 2nd was rushed and when I begged my nurse to please stop touching me, she yelled "shut up and push!" Needless to say... that was completely wrong and messed up! Since I cannot have a home birth this go around, I have swapped hospitals and even though everyone has been completely nice so far.. I am just so scared that I will have yet another bad birth experience and all I have ever wanted is a good stress free birth at my own pace and to not have someone telling me what to do with my newborn and when to do it, I do not want my child out of my sight for one second and this time I will fight for that! And I feel that all women deserve that right! Alabama really needs to change their laws to support us women and our babies!!!
