Black Belt Folk Roots Festival
Members of the Alabama Birth Coalition attended the Black Belt Folk Roots Festival in Eutaw, AL on August 25-26, 2007. During the festival, stories of women who were birthing their babies during the time of the "grand" midwives were recorded. Dedicated African American midwives, such as Margaret Charles Smith and Onnie Lee Logan, provided exemplary care for the women and babies they served. The Alabama Birth Coalition honors their memory as the roots from which modern midwifery has flourished.
