Our Board

What we do.

Q. Does Alabama Birth Coalition endorse political candidates or political parties?
A. No. ABC is a nonpartisan organization and does not endorse specific candidates or any political party. In fact, our legislation is refreshingly unusual in it's bipartisanship. Our bills have been sponsored and supported by Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. During the legislative session, we produce and distribute a Voter's Guide that describes every incumbent and candidate's position on our legislation to license Certified Professional Midwives to attend births out-of-hospital. This resource helps ABC supporters to talk to their elected representatives and make the voting decisions that are right for their families.

Q. ABC clearly supports a women's right to determine the circumstances of childbirth. Where do you stand on other reproductive issues, like abortion or contraception?
A. We have supporters from a variety of political, religious, and philosophical backgrounds who are united around the singular issue of improving birth. As an organization, we do not take a stance on other reproductive issues.

Q. Does ABC think every woman should have an out-of-hospital birth, or an unmedicated birth?
A. No. ABC advocates for the rights of maternity care consumers to make an informed choice among high quality, integrated, evidence-based services in homes, birth centers, and hospitals. When desired, no woman should be denied a licensed birth attendant at her home, an epidural in the hospital, a labor and delivery unit near her home, or support for normal, physiologic birth in the hospital. We respect and promote individualized decisions.

Q. Does ABC support families choosing unassisted home birth?
A. ABC does not, in any way, promote or encourage birth without a certified attendant present to monitor, assist, and facilitate transfer to appropriate facilities if needed. We are aware that some families are making this choice out of desperation and we are working tirelessly to legalize and license Certified Professional Midwives to meet this need.

Q. Who or what do you blame for the shameful health outcomes and lack of birth options in Alabama?
A. The maternity care crisis in Alabama is complicated and pointing fingers won't get us any closer to solutions. We owe it to mothers and babies to come together in respectful dialogue and address each stakeholder's concerns on every issue. The Alabama Birth Coalition believes that the majority of medical professionals are genuinely motivated to improve birth in Alabama and open to aligning with consumer groups towards this end.
